Music NL award nominees announced:
Laura Madonna Murray has been delivering award-winning performances as a pianist for over a decade. She holds a Masters degree in music and has remarkably brought Classical art music out of the concert hall by creatively pairing segments with folk/rock favourites: "When she takes her seat in front of the piano, one never knows what to expect."
Her international performances, and universal conscience have left her more aware of audience energy and often serve as a basis for her original songs; it's also how she became known as the 'Traveling Piano Playing Yogi.' Her one-woman-show features standards and originals, some of which include classical masterpieces seamlessly intertwined with popular songs. Murray entertains with her distinct voice, technical command of the keyboard, and charming wit while interpreting songs representative of jazz, folk, rock, pop, singer-songwriter, soul, and blues styles. Her sound and presence has been compared to Carole King, Annie Lennox, and Janis Jopin; Laura cites her inspirations and influences as Nina Simone, Fats Waller, Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Amelia Curran, and Ben Caplan. Having been broadcast on the CBC, Eastlink TV, BellTV, K-Rock radio, Radio St. Pierre, and ECMA Radio, just to name a few, and having played stages from Thailand to London, rural France to rural Newfoundland, and most recently up and down the coast of Australia, Laura Madonna Murray, female artist of the year nominee, is growing her audience base as a fresh and unconventional performer. Check out her MusicNL Instrumental Album of the Year nominated debut album, Solo/So High, released in June, 2016.
Solo/So High is a compilation of instrumental piano music showcasing the works of Mozart, Chopin, Gulda, and Canadian Composer, Oskar Morawetz through the artistry of Laura Madonna Murray. The 8 tracks feature a variety of styles ranging from Jazz, Classical, Romantic, to 20th Century, within the genre collectively known as Classical Music.
