About

"When she takes her seat in front of the piano, one never knows what to expect." Andrew Robinson, The Compass

Laura Madonna Murray has been delivering award-winning performances as a pianist for over a decade. She holds a Masters of Music degree and has remarkably brought Classical art music out of the concert hall by creatively pairing segments with folk/rock favourites: "When she takes her seat in front of the piano, one never knows what to expect."

Her international performances and universal conscience have left her more  aware of audience energy and often serve as a basis for her original songs; it's also how she became known as the Traveling Piano Playing Yogi. Her one-woman-show features standards and originals. Murray entertains with her distinct voice, technical command of the keyboard, and charming wit while interpreting songs representative of jazz, folk, rock, pop, singer-songwriter, soul, and blues styles. Her sound and presence has been compared to Carole King, Melanie, Annie Lennox, and Janis Jopin; Laura cites her inspirations and influences as Nina Simone, Fats Waller, Bob Dylan, Amelia Curran, and Ben Caplan. She's been broadcast on the CBC, Eastlink TV, BellTV, K-Rock radio, Radio St. Pierre, ECMA Radio, and most recently in Australia just to name a few. Having played stages from Thailand to London, rural France to rural Newfoundland, and up and down the coast of Australia, Laura Madonna Murray,  female artist of the year nominee, is growing her audience base as a fresh and unconventional performer. Check out her MusicNL Instrumental Album of the Year nominated debut album, Solo/So High, released in June, 2016.

It's an ever evolving practice

Studying a Masters of Music Therapy at the University of Melbourne was a natural path. Fascinated by neuroscience and the power of music, by 2020 Laura will be a Registered Music Therapist. Following a cancer diagnosis in the family, perspective shifted... several times! Moving from teaching yoga, fitness, and piano to full-time performing now there's a desire to balancing these three inspiring and soul-nourishing professions.
